Sadly, we start June unable to teach our regular classes due to a COVID-19 lock down, but we are sure it will not be for long. While not a replacement for face to face training, our online learning portal provides detailed training material for both Karate and Tai Chi, designed to assist serious students at all levels in their learning endeavors.  You can access information applicable to your level and also review material from previous levels you have attained. Please contact Geoff or Bree if you have not received the link and password to access your online learning page.

Fingers crossed, the lockdown is short and we will see you back in class very soon! Please stay up to date with the latest changes and updates by visiting our ‘news’ page. Keep on practicing!!
 

YONDAN (4th DAN) GRADING

Congratulations to Sensei Wayne Horrobin on his recent 4th Dan (Yondan) grading!

Sensei Wayne’s grading task was to demonstrate our entire syllabus with a high level of proficiency . Our syllabus incorporates some 28 kata drawn from Ohsuka Tadahiko Sensei’s Goju Kensha system. Of these 28 kata, 16 kata are from Goju Ryu, 11 from Shorin Ryu and 1 has more direct Chinese White Crane origins. The grading also required demonstration of effective applications (bunkai) for all kata performed.

We are pleased to say that Sensei Wayne’s many years of training and dedication to karate both as a student and referee shone through during his entire grading.

SHODAN HO GRADING

Congratulations to our advanced juniors, Xanelle and Yazelle, on your recent Shodan Ho grading. You have both shown an extraordinary level of focus and commitment to reach this level particularly over the last 12 months during the interruptions of COVID attending online and outdoor classes. Your hard work and dedication was reflected in your grading.

  We at WBMA have been lucky enough to witness your confidence and skills flourish over the years.  You should be very proud of your achievement, we certainly are!

TAI CHI - Cheng Ming Logo

Cheng Ming Australia has recently advised that it is a requirement for all Tai Chi students to wear a suitable top displaying the Cheng Ming logo when training or grading.

We have recently placed an order of light weight microfiber shirts and they should arrive shortly.  If you still need to organise a top with a logo, please contact Bree for options, we also can arrange embroidery if you have a favorite top.
 

CHENG MING WEAPONRY - SHORT STICK

Open to all our WBMA karate and tai chi students, weaponry classes offer a chance to broaden your martial arts knowledge and enjoy learning something a bit different. There is an interesting connection between our karate and tai chi styles as Ohtsuka Tadahiko Sensei (whose photo is at the front of our karate dojo) studied for a time with Grandmaster Wang Shu Chin who developed the Cheng Ming internal kung fu system that we teach.

Our next Weaponry class is on June the 19th at Sunbury West P.S Gym so save the date to keep learning more of the short stick pattern.
 

KUMITE CLASSES

Recent kumite (sparring) classes have been an outstanding success.  Participating students have been able to enhance their knowledge and put their skills to the test. We now see students developing more advanced techniques each lesson.

Our aim in these sessions is to develop the confidence of each individual student. We have had some students enquiring about sports karate and competition. 

Shihan Geoff and Sensei Bree visited the 2021 Karate Victoria Championships earlier this year to become more familiar with competitions with the hope in encouraging this interest for our students.  We are also in the process of becoming a member of Karate Victoria to open the potential for any student interested in the sport.

Next kumite class is Saturday June 5th at 1-2pm at the Sunbury West P.S Dojo

This is an excellent tool for all students to use at home when training. These videos feature Geoff or Bree and show all the skills you need to know for your level of training and is available to Karate and Tai Chi Students.
